UNGA-6 LEGAL

Agenda Item: Clarifying and Strengthening the Principles of Jus in Bello in the Face of New Warfare Technologies

War no longer looks the way it used to. Battlefields are no longer defined by borders alone, and decisions once made by soldiers are increasingly shaped by algorithms, code, and machines. As technology transforms the nature of conflict, the law that governs it is forced to keep pace.

The Sixth Committee (Legal) of the United Nations General Assembly stands at the center of this challenge, addressing questions related to the development and application of international law, particularly international humanitarian law. At stake are the principles of jus in bello, the legal framework that regulates the conduct of hostilities and seeks to protect civilians by limiting the means and methods of warfare.
